About PALM Foundation
PALM Foundation is a well-recognized community development non-government organization based in the Nuwara Eliya District of Sri Lanka. It serves plantation and rural communities through a participatory and holistic development approach, focusing on improving the lives of disadvantaged, marginalized, and isolated populations.
The organization was initiated in the 1980s by a group of Dutch volunteers led by Ms. Natascha Sennema, who was deeply moved by the poor living conditions of plantation workers and surrounding rural communities. PALM Foundation was formally established in 1985 and registered in 1989 under the relevant government authorities.
From its inception, PALM Foundation has implemented integrated community development programmes through a strong emphasis on social mobilization as a pathway to community empowerment. This approach strengthens local civil society structures and promotes participatory and sustainable development.
PALM Foundation implements integrated community development programmes across the following key areas:
• Community Capacity Development & Social Empowerment
• Child & Women’s Rights Protection
• Environmental Sustainability & Food Security
• Livelihoods & Economic Empowerment
• Community Infrastructure Development
• Social Cohesion & Peacebuilding
These programmes address the root causes of poverty by strengthening wellbeing, social inclusion, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability among plantation and rural communities, working in partnership with relevant stakeholders.
